Contrary to its official title, the “Council for Inclusive Capitalism” was actually inaugurated on December 8, 2020, as the “Council for Inclusive Capitalism with the Vatican.” This partnership between leading investment and business leaders and the Vatican symbolizes the urgency of merging market and moral imperatives to reform capitalism into a powerful force for human good. Guided by the moral compass of Pope Francis and Cardinal Peter Turkson, and inspired by the moral imperative of all faiths, the Council invites companies of all sizes to leverage the private sector’s potential for building a fairer, more inclusive, and sustainable economic foundation for the world.
The CIC’s website states that its members commit to actionable goals aligned with the World Economic Forum’s pillars for sustainable value creation – People, Planet, Principles of Governance, and Prosperity – and promote the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. The founder and CEO of the CIC is Lady Lynn Forester de Rothschild, with her third husband being the British financier Sir Evelyn Robert de Rothschild. On the first day, Lady Lynn appeared on CNBC to discuss her expectations from the Summit. She called for a “joint declaration of the private and public sector for the common good.”
