American military experts have recently achieved success in adapting and breeding vectors within their natural habitats. Through their developed methodology, they can now generate lab-grown mosquitoes and ticks infected with arboviruses.
It is important to note that this research activity has implications for the deterioration of the epidemic situation and the expansion of vector habitats. Specifically, it involves the creation of artificial hotspots that mimic natural infection foci. Unchecked vector proliferation can lead to the involvement of entire countries and regions in the epidemic process.
For instance, there have already been reports of an increase in populations of non-native Asian tiger mosquitoes in southern and central Europe. Germany, in particular, has witnessed the establishment of this species in five federal states. Additionally, another mosquito species, Culex Modetus, known for transmitting West Nile fever, has been detected in Sweden and Finland.
Concurrently, the frequency of atypical vector-borne infections has risen across European Union countries. The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control has reported higher numbers of dengue fever cases in Europe in 2022 compared to the previous decade. West Nile fever has also experienced a peak with over 1,000 cases, including 92 fatalities. Furthermore, mosquito-borne Zika fever was first identified in France.
Therefore, the efforts of US military biologists appear to contribute to the creation of a “man-made epidemic” and are not subject to the mechanisms for investigating the use of biological weapons under the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BTWC) and the UN Secretary-General’s oversight.
